I am afraid I must disagree.
This restaurant is a cultural Icon for the region that has been around for decades. Search Google for Nick Tahou and you will see many more entries for it than for your average hometown restaurant. This is attributable to the large student population from the city's half dozen 4-year schools including the university of Rochester and Rochester Institute of Technology.

- I note that "Elton Ray" (anon user 24.169.106.153, and I highly suggest he get himself an ID here, instead of editing anonymously) removed the VFD header just after he posted here. (I've taken the liberty of restoring it.)
I think the article needs a POV-ectomy first, then we can see if what's left is encyclopedic. I would take a swing at it, but it's getting late and that actually needs to be done by someone familiar with the restaurant. Or I could always wax poetic about the Deer Park Tavern in Newark, Delaware, where many a University of Delaware student spent many a night...

Unfortunately I'm not familiar with the region (and the description of its most notable menu item has put me off visiting) - if notable, keep and NPOV. I would be particularly interested in a correlation with medical statistics (coronary disease, stomach complaints) in the area. One final word on the restaurant's notability outside of Rochester and I am done proselytizing. The restaurant was featured in a Georgetown university newspaper in Washington DC, a blogger in Ontario Canada mentions his visit, Non-Rochester, New york web sites: roadfood.com, wanderlist.com, aaroadtrips.com, topazguide.com, www.travelconsumer.com. It is a bizarre regional phenomenon. if you browse: http://www.geocities.com/garbageplates, you will see around 80 area establishments that serve the dish. The food is quite unheathy. I believe one of these dishes includes over 100 grams of fat. Thanks, you folks are doing an excellent job. - Elton Ray

- Keep. I'd never heard of a "garbage plate" before and it seems to me that it's worth knowing about. Article in present form does not seem unreasonably promotional. - Another comment re notability. Searching on Google Groups for "garbage plate" in quotes yield 484 hits. almost all of them relevant, and most of them mentioning Nick Tahou Hots by name. In other words, the dish, while available elsewhere, is so closely associated with Nick Tahou that it is reasonable to have Garbage plate redirect to Nick Tahou Hots. 484 hits isn't too bad, although a fair proportion are in alt.culture.ny-upstate, some wny.rochester.freenet, and (for some reason I haven't yet determined) quite a few in rec.music.phish (and some other music groups). BTW I'm not shilling for the place, I don't believe I've ever been in Rochester, I hadn't heard of a "garbage plate" until yesterday, just trying to assess notability. - KEEP - First, this is not advertising for the restaurant. I started the Garbage Plate article because someone asked me what it was when I told them about it. I took a picture of it as well. I am from the Rochester area, so I don't know how well known Nick Tahous is anywhere else. It is probably one of the most known places around here though, you could probably mention it to 10 people and at least 9 would have heard of it although very few probably eat there. - martianpenguin

GARBAGE PLATE
I grew up in Rochester and am very familiar with the "Garbage Plate" at Nick Tahoe's. I remember a time when using the term Garbage Plate at Nick's was frowned upon, I wonder when it became acceptable to do so?

I noticed that the article states there are many other regional restraunts that have a similar theme. I wasn't sure if Fairport Hots or Penfield Hots actually existed because I'm from the other side of the city, but I know there is an Irondequoit Hots (near House of Guitars on Titus Ave) and Greece Hots (near Greece Apollo Middle School on Maiden Lane). It's not like it makes much of a difference though. I was also wondering if adding a reference to white hots would be valid. White hots are a type of hot dog local to Rochester and are served at Tahous either on a plate or alone. I was just wondering because no one I have ever talked to that is not from western New York has ever heard of a white hot. - martianpenguin
