I appreciate the enormous amount of work that went into this, but is this really necessary? There are entire encyclopedias devoted to obscure Tolkien characters. Wouldn't it make more sense to concentrate our efforts on Tolkien-related characters and terms that would be of some use to more casual fans?
Some of these rulers, of course, are of interest (the ruling queens, for instance, as support for discussions of Tolkien's portrayal of women), and of course Ar-Pharazôn. The listing, in and of itself, may be generally useful (and what the heck, I love this stuff, leave it in), but do we really need little stubs of articles for every single one of them?
I am willing to be persuaded. Aranel 16:47, 3 Aug 2004 (UTC)
- They are already there, so there's no point in deleting them. I would delete the stub notice from many of them, though, as there is nothing to add in many cases. Ausir 19:18, 3 Aug 2004 (UTC)
What about merging the ruling queens into one article? That would be a significant piece of Middle-earth lore for even the skeptics, as it plays a vital role in the discussion of the role of women in Tolkien's verse. And I really think it would be more useful to have them all listed together. As it is, one has to read through the lot of the articles in order to find the information. --Aranel ("Sarah") 21:54, 1 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- I'd like to bring this up again. Would it at least be acceptable to merge into this article the rulers about whom we know practically nothing other than some dates? Of course some of them deserve their own articles, but hardly all of them.
- Some candidates for merging:
- Tar-Súrion (no info except for something that happened elsewhere at the same time)
- Tar-Anárion "little is known"
- Vardamir Nólimon abdicated (ruled for one day) - we could say that in one sentence in this article
- Tar-Telemmaitë (no information other than name, dates, and parentage)
- Ar-Zimrathôn
- Ar-Sakalthôr
- If the ruler articles (with the exception of the really significant ones) were merged, much of the information that they contain would be automatically present in the new format (i.e. who preceded and followed them). The information, such as it is, would also be easier to follow in logical progression and therefore more useful. Aranel ("Sarah") 22:35, 28 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- I went ahead and did Ruling Queens of Númenor. The amount of effort it took to compile the bits of the story scattered in various articles seems to me to have made it a worthwhile undertaking. I basically merged Silmariën, Tar-Telperiën, Tar-Vanimeldë, and Míriel (Second Age), but I haven't redirected them yet. Aranel ("Sarah") 23:59, 28 Oct 2004 (UTC)
