Template:HP-project For clarification. First of all, Cho Chang is a Chinese name. It is not Japanese nor Korean nor something else. Second, because it is not Japanese name nor Japanese word, it is meaningless that what does it mean in Japanese. For example, a English word sigh means in Japanese a difference, rhinoceros or die but so what? -- Taku 03:00 Jan 27, 2003 (UTC)
- "Cho Chang" is absolutely not Chinese. "Cho" does not exist in Chinese. I'm betting it was just some Asian-sounding name made up to add some ethnic diversity to the novel. -66.63.126.171 03:01, 4 Apr 2004 (UTC)
- Since the link to the etymology page (http://www.theninemuses.net/hp/c.html) was only put in to clarify the etymology of Cho Chang's name, and since it now appears that the etymology it gives is incorrect, can anyone suggest a reason for having the link in the article at all? - The explanation in the link is ridiculous. Chochang can mean the souce for row fish in Korean. I agree to the removal 100%. soax 18:26 Jan 27, 2003 (UTC)
- I agree. I also admit that my note about the Thai alphabet is irrelevant, so I intend to delete that, too. -- Heron
I've restored the note about the Thai letter. It may not be relevant to Cho Chang the fictional character, but covering other meanings of terms is nice and encyclopaedic, I think. -- Oliver P. 01:12 Jan 29, 2003 (UTC)
- And who can say for sure that Rowling didn't base the name on the name of the Thai letter? I've added a note to that effect. --Lee M
