Täby Municipality is a Municipality in central Sweden where the town of Täby (pop. 57,000) is the seat.
The history of Täby goes back to the Viking Age. The cross on the coat of arms is found on Runic inscriptions. After the Viking Age, the inhabitants were farmers in villages for some 800 years.
With the northern main line Railway inaugurated in 1885, Täby received a population expansion. People settled in towns near the railway stations. The residential suburb Täby began building in 1907. After five years, the inhabitants had increased to 1,000 people.
Beginning in 1950, the villages expanded and grew together around the Täby church as a lucrative suburb of Stockholm. The town of Täby recieved its rights as a merchant (Köping) in 1948, with a population of 9,000.
The slogan of the municipality is today in translation "Täby, the city in the countryside".
Sights
The largest horse horse racing track in Sweden is Täby Galopp, inaugurated in 1960.
Täby Church was built in the 13th century. It houses a triptych from the 15th century. The most notable object are the wall paintings from the medieval times. One of them portraits a man playing chess with the Grim Reaper and was the inspiration for the movie director Ingmar Bergman when he made the perhaps best known Swedish movie ever, The Seventh Seal.
