The event is usually characterized by having four on four (or sometimes five on five) tag-team elimination matches. These matches are generally referred to simply as "Survivor Series Matches". The 2005 event is scheduled to take place on November 27, 2005. Survivor Series is the second longest running pay-per-view event in WWE history, behind WrestleMania.
Notable moments
- At Survivor Series 1990, The Undertaker debuted as the Million Dollar Man's mystery teammate. Also, the introduction of the infamous Gobbledygooker (Hector Guerrero dressed in a turkey costume hatching from an oversized egg); and Sgt. Slaughter's promo thoroughly insulting servicemen stationed in Iraq (during Operation: Desert Shield).
- At Survivor Series 1994, Bob Backlund defeated Bret Hart to win the championsip in a "towel match" (where the winner would be determined after the loser's ally threw a towel in the ring specific to that wrestler). Hart's ally, The British Bulldog, had been knocked out, and Backlund's ally (and Hart's brother), Owen Hart, feigned concern for his brother's condition and begged the referee to allow him to stop the match. Eventually, he was allowed to throw Hart's pink and black towel into the ring, after which Owen Hart gleefully celebrated Backlund's victory. Ironically, Backlund's title win was the reverse of how he lost the title 11 years earlier to The Iron Shiek.
- At Survivor Series 1996 The Rock made his WWF debut in a survivor match which saw him face his future rival Triple H. Also, Shawn Michaels lost his WWF Championship to Sycho Sid after holding the belt since WrestleMania XII.
- At Survivor Series 1997, the infamous Montreal Screwjob occurred between Bret Hart and Vince McMahon, in Hart's championship defense against Shawn Michaels.
- At Survivor Series 1998, The Rock defeated Mankind after Vince McMahon called for the bell to be rung while Mankind was trapped in the Sharpshooter, but did not submit.
- At Survivor Series 1999, Stone Cold Steve Austin was run over by an unknown assailant (later revealed to be Rikishi) with an automobile so that Triple H could avoid a title defense against Austin.
- At Survivor Series 2000, Kurt Angle defeated The Undertaker after his similar looking brother, Eric, distracted The Undertaker. At the same event, Steve Austin lifted Triple H's car with a forklift and tipped it over — while Triple H was in it.
- At Survivor Series 2001, a winner takes all match between Team WWE, consisting of The Big Show, Kane, The Undertaker, Chris Jericho and The Rock versus The Alliance, represented by Kurt Angle, Rob Van Dam, Booker T, Stone Cold Steve Austin and Shane McMahon took place. Team WWE won after Kurt Angle turned on The Alliance, forcing the ECW/WCW Alliance faction to disband.
- At Survivor Series 2002, the first ever Elimination Chamber match featuring Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Kane, Booker T, Rob Van Dam and Chris Jericho has held.
- At Survivor Series 2003, Stone Cold had to forfeit his position as general manager of WWE RAW after his team lost to Eric Bischoff's team in a Survivor Series match up and during the Buried Alive match between Undertaker and Vince McMahon, Kane interfered and helped Vince bury the Undertaker alive.
- At Survivor Series 2004, Randy Orton led his team to victory, gaining himself and each other member of his team of Chris Jericho, Chris Benoit and Maven the power to run WWE RAW for one week each.
