According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 23.4 km² (9.0 mi²). 23.4 km² (9.0 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 8,267 people, 3,217 households, and 2,351 families residing in the city. The population density is 353.5/km² (915.3/mi²). There are 3,337 housing units at an average density of 142.7/km² (369.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.27% White, 1.08% African American, 0.13% Native American, 1.44% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. 0.88% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,217 households out of which 26.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.7% are married couples living together, 5.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.9% are non-families. 24.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 2.94.
In the city the population is spread out with 21.6% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 19.8% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 25.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 47 years. For every 100 females there are 88.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.0 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $67,576, and the median income for a family is $90,417. Males have a median income of $60,869 versus $35,044 for females. Points of Interest
Sunset Hills is home to Thomas Jefferson School, a private boarding school for grades 7-12. TJ, as it is called, holds the #1 ranking SAT scores for highschoolers in a private boarding school. It is also one of few schools in the nation to be completely faculty run, i.e., each teacher is a member of the school board while the headmaster, William Rowe, is school board president.
