Strontian is a village in Ardgour, in the Scottish Highlands. The mineral strontianite was discovered here, from which the element strontium was first isolated.
The village name, Sròn an t-Sìtheinn in Gaelic, translates as the promontary of the sìtheann, a sìtheann being a low, round hill inhabited by the mythological Sìth.
