Born in Brooklyn, New York on August 4, 1963, Silverman led a relatively normal life for many years. After getting a Master's degree in geology from the University of Rochester, Silverman realized there were very few jobs in his field of choice. After a short period working in a marketing job for a company that sold industrial controls, Silverman went back to college and became certified to teach earth science, chemistry, and general science.
Silverman soon became an earth science teacher at Chatham High School. One year later, when he became certified as a physics teacher, he switched to teaching physics, though he still taught earth science classes on occasion.
Silverman claims to have invented hundreds of items, some which he says are worth fortunes. He says he cannot decide which of his many ideas to develop. Silverman also runs the online business PETdiscounters.com (http://www.petdiscounters.com/) with his brother.
One day, Silverman thought to start a web site. He put in some unusual stories he knew and put on the title "Useless Information." At some point, a literary agent, coming across the web site, contacted Silverman. A friend of his convinced him to call her back, and the result was Silverman's first book, Einstein's Refrigerator. The stories that made it into the book were, of course, removed from the site (with one exception).
Several years later, Silverman came out with Lindbergh's Artificial Heart.
