St. Louis County is a county located in the state of Minnesota. As of 2000, the population is 200,528. Its county seat is Duluth. It is the largest county in Minnesota, and the largest in the United States east of the Mississippi River. Major industries include pulpwood production and tourism. At one time, taconite mining was a major part of the economy. Parts of the Bois Forte and Fond du Lac Indian reservations are in the county.

Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 17,767 km² (6,860 mi²). 16,123 km² (6,225 mi²) of it is land and 1,644 km² (635 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.25% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 200,528 people, 82,619 households, and 51,389 families residing in the county. The population density is 12/km² (32/mi²). There are 95,800 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (15/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.86% White, 0.85% Black or African American, 2.03% Native American, 0.66% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 1.35% from two or more races. 0.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 82,619 households out of which 27.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.30% are married couples living together, 9.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.80% are non-families. 31.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.90.
In the county the population is spread out with 22.40% under the age of 18, 11.40% from 18 to 24, 25.90% from 25 to 44, 24.30% from 45 to 64, and 16.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 96.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.80 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $36,306, and the median income for a family is $47,134. Males have a median income of $37,934 versus $24,235 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,982. 12.10% of the population and 7.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.10% of those under the age of 18 and 8.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
