South River is a borough located in Middlesex County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 15,322.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 7.6 km² (2.9 mi²). 7.3 km² (2.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.42% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 15,322 people, 5,606 households, and 3,985 families residing in the borough. The population density is 2,105.3/km² (5,444.7/mi²). There are 5,769 housing units at an average density of 792.7/km² (2,050.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 83.55% White, 6.06% African American, 0.12% Native American, 3.54% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 3.83% from other races, and 2.85% from two or more races. 9.66% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 5,606 households out of which 32.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.2% are married couples living together, 11.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.9% are non-families. 23.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.72 and the average family size is 3.23.
In the borough the population is spread out with 23.0% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 33.4% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 97.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.7 males.
The median income for a household in the borough is $52,324, and the median income for a family is $62,869. Males have a median income of $42,186 versus $31,098 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $23,684. 4.9% of the population and 3.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.9% of those under the age of 18 and 7.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

History of South River
South River was originally part of the the town East Brunswick. Originally referred to as Washington, the town split away as did Spotswood, New Jersey, Milltown, New Jersey. (To be added)

Town Name Changes
- 1683-1720: Commonly referred to as South River Landing (still part of East Brunswick).
- 1720-1784: Changed to Willettstown after settler Samuel Willett (still part of East Brunswick).
- 1784-1870: Changed to Washington and referred to as Washington Village, Washington Woods, and Little Washington (still part of East Brunswick). The name was considered at the suggestion of Abraham Barkelew, one of the original settlers in the town.
- 1870-present: village officially changed to South River after breaking away from East Brunswick Township.
- 1897: South River becomes borough.
