Solon Township is a civil township of Leelanau County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 1,542.

Communities

  • Cedar is a small, unincorporated community at the corners of sections five, six, seven and eight.
  • Fouch is a small unincorporated community on the south end of Lake Leelanau at Template:Coor dms. It is named after John R. Fouch, who settled there in 1893. It was a station on the Michigan & Northwestern Railroad. After Fouch's death, Daniel Perrin acquired the land in 1927 and developed a summer colony known as Perrin's Landing. Fouch Hill, now the site of the Timberlee Ski Area, is just south of Fouch.
  • Solon is a small unincorporated community on the Cedar Run Creek between sections 21 and 22 in the central part of the township.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 76.9 km² (29.7 mi²). 68.9 km² (26.6 mi²) of it is land and 8.0 km² (3.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 10.40% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,542 people, 595 households, and 464 families residing in the township. The population density is 22.4/km² (57.9/mi²). There are 738 housing units at an average density of 10.7/km² (27.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 97.21% White, 0.13% African American, 0.84% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.32% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. 0.45% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 595 households out of which 35.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.7% are married couples living together, 7.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.0% are non-families. 18.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the township the population is spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 26.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 95.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.3 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $47,448, and the median income for a family is $53,571. Males have a median income of $37,045 versus $25,481 for females. The per capita income for the township is $22,987. 3.6% of the population and 2.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.4% of those under the age of 18 and 4.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
