Shoals is a town located in Martin County, Indiana. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 807. The city is the county seat of Martin CountyTemplate:GR.
Shoals is best known for the Jug Rock, the USA's largest free-standing table rock formation East of the Mississippi River.
Geography
Shoals is located at 38°39'59" North, 86°47'33" West (38.666409, -86.792391)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.9 km² (1.9 mi²). 4.7 km² (1.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.26% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 807 people, 377 households, and 214 families residing in the town. The population density is 173.1/km² (448.0/mi²). There are 420 housing units at an average density of 90.1/km² (233.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.52% White, 0.87% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 1.24% from two or more races. 1.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 377 households out of which 19.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.1% are married couples living together, 12.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.0% are non-families. 38.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
