Sherwood Township is a township located in Branch County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 2,284.
The Village of Sherwood is located within the township. There are no other incorporated municipalities and no named settlements or unincorporated communities within the township.
Geography
Michigan State Highway 60/Michigan State Highway 66 pass through the northwest corner of the township. M-66 separates from M-60 and goes due north while M-60 continues east.
The St. Joseph River flows diagonally from northeast to southwest through the township. The township is drained by several small streams and lakes that flow into the St. Joseph. Nottawa Creek passes through the northwest corner of the township, before joining the St. Joseph further downstream in Leonidas Township in St. Joseph County, Michigan.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 93.5 km² (36.1 mi²). 90.3 km² (34.9 mi²) of it is land and 3.2 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.41% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,284 people, 885 households, and 658 families residing in the township. The population density is 25.3/km² (65.5/mi²). There are 1,112 housing units at an average density of 12.3/km² (31.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 97.02% White, 0.22% African American, 0.92% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.04% from other races, and 1.62% from two or more races. 0.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 885 households out of which 31.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.6% are married couples living together, 10.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.6% are non-families. 20.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 2.94.
In the township the population is spread out with 25.5% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 24.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 108.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 106.8 males.
The median income for a household in the township is $34,231, and the median income for a family is $38,203. Males have a median income of $30,485 versus $21,536 for females.
