Pasqualino Settebellezze is a 1976 Italian language film written and directed by Lina Wertmüller starring Giancarlo Giannini in the title role. Fernando Rey and Shirley Stoler are also featured.
Plot
The picaresque story follows the life of its hero, Pasqualino "Seven Beauties" (whence the English language title of the film), through Fascist Italy during the years leading up to World War II. Pasqualino, the sole son in a family with eight children is imprisoned for committing a murder in the name of family honor, consigned to a mental institution and, after the entry of Italy into World War II, paroled into the Italian army for service on the Eastern Front. Deserting the army, he is captured by the Germans and sent to a concentration camp, where his moral limitations and his will to survive are pitted against each other in a most unusual fashion.

The film was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Director, Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Screenplay.
