Abu Mansur Sebük Tigin (ca 942 - August 997) was the founder of the Ghaznavid Empire and dynasty in today's Afghanistan. He was born in Barskhan as a slave but married the daughter of the Samanid governor of Ghazna (Ghazni). He succeeded as governor in 977 and rose against the weakening Samanids. During the rest of his life he conquered most of modern Afghanistan. He died in Balkh during a campaign and was succeeded by his son, Ismail, who soon was overthrown by his elder brother Mahmud.
