Scotland is a city located in Bon Homme County, South Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 891.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 km² (0.8 mi²). 2.2 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Scotland has been assigned the ZIP code 57059 and the FIPS place code 57940.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 891 people, 405 households, and 249 families residing in the city. The population density is 409.5/km² (1,057.3/mi²). There are 469 housing units at an average density of 215.6/km² (556.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 99.33% White, 0.11% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.11% from two or more races. 0.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 405 households out of which 21.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.6% are married couples living together, 6.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.5% are non-families. 36.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 25.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.09 and the average family size is 2.68.

In the city the population is spread out with 20.5% under the age of 18, 3.6% from 18 to 24, 19.4% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 36.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 51 years. For every 100 females there are 84.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $28,984, and the median income for a family is $34,821. Males have a median income of $27,321 versus $18,542 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,427. 11.4% of the population and 7.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.1% of those under the age of 18 and 14.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
