Schoolcraft Township is a township in Kalamazoo County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 7,260. The township is named for Henry Schoolcraft, noted for conducting many early land surveys throughout Michigan.
Communities
- The village of Schoolcraft is located on the western side of the township on U.S. Highway 131.
- The village of Vicksburg is partially within the township on the east side.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 93.4 km² (36.0 mi²). 89.0 km² (34.4 mi²) of it is land and 4.4 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.69% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 7,260 people, 2,781 households, and 2,027 families residing in the township. The population density is 81.6/km² (211.3/mi²). There are 2,916 housing units at an average density of 32.8/km² (84.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 96.96% White, 0.51% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.66% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 1.34% from two or more races. 1.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,781 households out of which 36.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.7% are married couples living together, 9.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.1% are non-families. 22.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.06.
In the township the population is spread out with 27.4% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 25.4% from 45 to 64, and 11.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.0 males.
