A schnoodle is a dog cross-breed between a Schnauzer and a Poodle. They are one of many Poodle hybrids now being sold as a deliberate mix.

Appearance

Because there are different Schnauzer and Poodle sizes, the resulting Schnoodles can also vary tremendously. The breeds mixed make a big difference in their sizes, temperaments, and care. Depending on what it inherits from the parents, the coat can be curly, coarse, or mixed. Ears and build vary as well. Because Schnauzers often have cropped ears, some breeders crop a Schnoodle's ears. More commonly, Schnoodles have docked tails, because both parent breeds normally have cropped tails in countries that allow or encourage cropping.

Temperament

Schnoodles are easy to train and like to be around people, which can make them good family pets and companions. They are generally happy and affectionate. Smaller varieties make wonderful lap dogs. Schnoodles are energetic, intelligent, obedient, playful, and alert. Schnoodles can carry traits from both Poodles and Schnauzers; therefore, people interested in getting a Schnoodle need to research both breeds, inquire closely about the dog's parentage and ancestry, and understand that the dog can have a mix of any of the characteristics or traits. Many Schnoodles enjoy playing in the water, and most love a game of fetch.

Schnoodles can acquire the bad behaviour of digging, but additional training, attention, and exercise can often stop this. They might become yappy if not trained correctly; this must be corrected quickly before it becomes a habit. Bad traits are influenced by which breed dominates the dog's personality.

Health

The Schnoodle's life expectancy varies, but on average is about 15 years and can be even more. They are expected to be healthy because of the protection that allegedly comes from being a hybrid, also called hybrid vigor.

Care

Schnoodles don't need much exercise, but, like most dogs, they enjoy good, brisk, daily walks and love to play off the leash.

Schnoodles need weekly brushing and, if they inherited the Poodle's coat, need to have their coats clipped every six to 12 weeks. Like Poodles, Schnoodles shed little to no hair, which might provide an advantage for some allergy sufferers.
