Saranac, New York

Saranac is a town located in Clinton County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,165.

The Town of Saranac is on the western border of the county.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 301.4 km² (116.4 mi²). 299.8 km² (115.7 mi²) of it is land and 1.7 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.55% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,165 people, 1,519 households, and 1,134 families residing in the town. The population density is 13.9/km² (36.0/mi²). There are 1,642 housing units at an average density of 5.5/km² (14.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.63% White, 0.14% African American, 0.34% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 0.41% from two or more races. 1.03% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,519 households out of which 39.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.1% are married couples living together, 9.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.3% are non-families. 19.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.14.

In the town the population is spread out with 28.6% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 30.8% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 11.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 96.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $45,761, and the median income for a family is $51,542. Males have a median income of $40,315 versus $28,750 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,242. 9.8% of the population and 6.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.1% of those under the age of 18 and 16.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • High Bank -- A hamlet in the southwest part of the town on Standish Road.
  • Moffitsville -- A hamlet southwest of Saranac village on Route 3 by the Saranac River.
  • Picketts Corners -- A hamlet northeast of Saranac village on Route 3.
  • Redford -- A hamlet in the southwest part of the town on Route 3.
  • Saranac -- The hamlet of Saranac, located on Route 3 on the north side of the Saranac River.
  • Saranac River -- A stream that flows along the south edge of the town to Lake Champlain.
  • Standish -- A hamlet in the northwest corner of the town.
