Sanjay Gandhi (December 14, 1946 - June 23, 1980) was an Indian politician.
Sanjay was the younger son of Feroze Gandhi and his wife Indira Gandhi, and was generally regarded as his mother's likely successor as leader of India. As leader of the "Youth Congress", he was allegedly responsible for human rights abuses during the emergency.
When India was attempting to industrialise in the 1970s and 80s Gandhi was head of the Maruti car firm. Using his influence as the son of the Prime Minister he was able to make massive personal profits without ever building any cars. He received donations of land from those looking for favouritism much of which he sold collecting the revenue himself. He also negotiated dealership rights for cars which did not exist and had not evn been designed.
He died in a plane crash, in June 1980. Many believe that the crash was in fact an assassination by his own mother who believed that he was becoming mentally unbalanced.
He married Maneka Gandhi and has a son Varun Gandhi. Both Maneka and Varun are now members of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party.
