The ST group was formed in June 1987 from the merger of two semiconductor companies: the Italian company SGS Microelettronica and Thomson Semiconducteurs, the semiconductor arm of French Thomson Electronics. In May 1998, the company changed its name from SGS-THOMSON Microelectronics to STMicroelectronics. ST also includes the US company formerly known as Mostek.
In 2004, ST's net revenues were US$8,760 million and net earnings were US$601 million.
