The Sûreté du Québec or SQ (meaning "Quebec security or safety," but usually translated as "Quebec Provincial Police or Force") is the provincial police force of Quebec. The Sûreté du Québec headquarters are located in Montreal and the force employs roughly 3300 officers.
The organization is responsible for providing police service to localities in the province that do not otherwise have municipal or regional police services. Therefore, they are mainly present in small rural and suburban localities and the provincial highways. They also have a mandate to investigate crimes throughout the province.
Contrary to common belief, the Sûreté du Québec has fewer officers than the Montreal Police Service. In the early 2000s, the force amalgamated many smaller police services (e.g., Drummondville and Saint-Hyacinthe).
