Ryu Hayabusa is a fictional video game character who stars in the Ninja Gaiden series of video games, as well appearing in the Dead or Alive fighting game series, all developed by Team Ninja, a part of publisher Tecmo.

Ryu is one of the most, if not the most well known video game ninja, among other video game ninja such as Mortal Kombat's Sub Zero and Hotsuma from Shinobi. Those fictional characters shifted the ninja image further away from the historically accurate "real ninja", who used stealth to accomplish their missions, and closer to the "Real Ultimate Power" ninja who were highly skilled and resourceful enough to take on the toughest of foes head-on.

Ninja Gaiden Background

Ryu Hayabusa is a direct descendant of the Dragon Lineage; ninja warriors from ancient times who forged the Dragon Sword that Ryu now wields, slew the Dark Dragon and sealed away the Evil Deities.

Through years of training, developing his ninja senses and skills, Ryu has become what is know as a "modern day Super Ninja". He advanced even further and became the legendary Dragon Ninja, like the ones who sealed away the Evil Deities in ancient times.

Although Ryu is still just a human and can easily be killed (as many Ninja Gaiden gamers know all too well, due to the extreme difficulty of the series), he has his speed, agility, high combat capabilites with both hand-to-hand techniques and his Dragon Sword, and his spiritual ninja abilities in ninpo, along with dragon lineage heritage and an animal guardian spirit. Ryu Hayabusa is quite capable of surviving the largest of hordes and powerful enemies out to kill him. And he really needs anything he can get, because in all the Ninja Gaiden games, Ryu is forced to battle his way through armies of soldiers, tanks, assault helicopters, hordes of zombies, demons, robots and other ninja just to name a few. At the end of every stage, he will also have to fight bosses who are far more powerful than ordinary foes.

Games

Ryu first appeared in the Ninja Gaiden arcade game in 1988. In that same year, Ninja Gaiden was released on the NES the Famicom and the Sega Master System, though it bore little resemblance to the original arcade game. Two NES sequels followed in 1990 and 1991. Also in 1991, Ninja Gaiden Shadow was released on the Game Boy. Ryu's next few appearances were as a playable fighter in the Dead or Alive series, which saw releases on the Sony PlayStation, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, PlayStation 2, and Xbox platforms, as well as in arcades.

In 2004, the long-awaited and simply-titled Ninja Gaiden was released on the Xbox. Ryu Hayabusa is playable in Dead or Alive: Ultimate for the Xbox.

Spoiler Free Storyline

There was really no story to the original arcade version of Ninja Gaiden, except that Ryu and his red ninja sidekick (most likely his father) were beating up their foes throughout America. Ryu's story started out in Ninja Gaiden for the NES when he received a letter from his father, who went off to fight a life or death duel. Players are left guessing as the story progresses throughout the game, as the young Hayabusa goes on his quest for revenge and to uncover the truth behind his father's disappearance. This was followed by the next two games of the trilogy, which had mysterious intros that left the players guessing as the story unfolded. In Ninja Gaiden II, players were introduced to a new villain who wielded the Dark Sword of Chaos. In Ninja Gaiden III, Ryu Hayabusa was framed for killing his girlfriend, in a secret conspiracy that matches real-life UFO cover-ups. Eventually, Ryu moved from Ninja Gaiden to Tecmo's Dead or Alive series. During the series, we are introduced to Ryu's new look as well as another ninja clan, a friend of Ryu's who mysteriously disappeared, and a martial artist who challenges the ninja.

Finally, after the long wait, Ryu returned to Ninja Gaiden for Xbox, in a beautiful 3D game with in-depth gameplay. The story however is separated from the original NES Ninja Gaiden Trilogy by a few small changes, but is still connected to the DOA series. If you want to count this game with the original Ninja Gaiden Trilogy, it would fit in as prequel. The prologue explains the Mythos of the Dragon Linage who sided with the Dragons against the Evil Deities and the Tribes, and how they slew the Dark Dragon. The Dragons were described as god-like, benevolent creatures with metallic bones, teeth and claws, created by the Deity of Creation to counter the Evil Deities. The prologue included a brief history of the two Dragon Swords. The first being the Dark Dragon Blade, carved out of the bone of the legendary Dark Dragon that betrayed his breathern out of jealousy and thirst for power, joining the Evil Deities. This blade consumes evil, charging up as more evil is committed in its vicinity and as a result turns its wielder into the devil incarnate. The second sword is the Dragon Sword, carved out of the fang of the Dragon, and passed down the Dragon Lineage from generation to generation, and finally to Ryu Hayabusa. It is the same sword used by Ryu in the NES Ninja Gaiden trilogy.

After the prologue the story starts out with the young Ryu Hayabusa on a quest to infiltrate a rival Ninja Clan...
