Ryde is a city and a suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It lies on the north bank of the Parramatta River about 12km west of central Sydney and 8km east of Parramatta. The local government area extends from the Parramatta River to the Lane Cove River which encircles the area in the north, and is bounded in the east by the peninsula of Hunter's Hill and the city of Parramatta in the west.
The area also contains the North Ryde asylum and Ryde Hospital which service the surrounding areas. Schools in the area include government schools such as Ryde Secondary College, Marsden High School and Epping Boys High School. It also includes a few private schools such as Holy Cross College Ryde and Marist Brothers College Eastwood. It also includes one of Sydney's main universities, Macquarie University.
The City of Ryde includes the suburbs North Ryde, Denistone, Denistone East, Denistone West, Eastwood, Marsfield, Macquarie Park, Putney, Tennyson, Meadowbank, Melrose Park, Chatswood West, West Ryde, East Ryde, Top Ryde and part of Gladesville (shared with Hunter's Hill). The campus of Macquarie University is located in Marsfield and Macquarie Park.
Ryde contains St Anne's church, which has the grave of Maria Anne "Granny" Smith, in whose orchards the Granny Smith apple was first found. Every year, in the suburb of Eastwood, the granny-smith festival is held in her honor.
