Romeo and Juliet (1996 movie)

- The title of this article is incorrect because of technical limitations. The correct title is Romeo + Juliet.
Romeo + Juliet (full title: William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet) is a 1996 film adaptation of Shakespeare's play, Romeo and Juliet, directed by Baz Luhrmann. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Romeo and Claire Danes as Juliet. Despite the presence of the plus (+) sign, the title is pronounced "Romeo and Juliet", not "Romeo plus Juliet".
Other members of the cast include
- Jesse Bradford (Balthasar)
- Vondie Curtis-Hall (Captain Prince)
- Brian Dennehy (Ted Montague)
- Christina Pickles (Caroline Montague)
- Paul Sorvino (Fulgencio Capulet)
- Diane Venora (Gloria Capulet)
- John Leguizamo (Tybalt)
- Miriam Margolyes (The Nurse)
- Dash Mihok (Benvolio)
- Harold Perrineau (Mercutio)
- Pete Postlethwaite (Father Laurence)
- Paul Rudd (Dave Paris)
This version is a transposition of Shakespeare's play into the present time, with swords replaced by guns, skyscrapers instead of castles, and MTV-like action. However, the movie uses Shakespeare's original dialogue, albeit with certain scenes rearranged.
The story takes place in Verona Beach, California, styled after Los Angeles, and a fictional place in the Mojave Desert called Mantua.
The film differs from the play in that Paris (or Dave Paris, the modern renaming) is not killed, and that the Montagues provoke the initial fight instead of the Capulets. Many lines in the film refer to weapons, so to save changing the script away from the original, the cast wield guns with fictional brand names like "Sword" or "Dagger".
