Robert Stevenson

Robert Stevenson (8 June 1772–1850) was a Scottish lighthouse engineer and stepson of Thomas Smith, also a lighthouse engineer.
In 1786 Stevenson was apprenticed to a gunsmith and then to Thomas Smith. Stevenson's mother Jane married Smith in 1792. Stevenson became a partner in Smith's business in 1800.
Stevenson had three sons who all became engineers: David, Alan, and Thomas. Robert Louis Stevenson was the son of Thomas.
