Rob Neyer
|
Rob Neyer is an baseball author and, since 1996, a columnist for ESPN.com. Until recently, Neyer's work was available without subscription, but it is now part of the Insider service and can be read only upon payment. A disciple of sabermetrics legend Bill James, his column is an outlet for everyday fans to gain from the insight that statistics-centered analysis can offer. Neyer's statistical analysis often finds him at odds with other ESPN columnists, such as Buster Olney, who hew to more "traditional" types of baseball writing and generally eschew newfangled statistics like On-base plus slugging percentages.
His books include Baseball Dynasties, Feeding the Green Monster, Rob Neyer's Big Book of Baseball Lineups, and The Neyer/James Guide to Pitchers, co-authored with Bill James. In 2004, Neyer became embroiled in a minor controversy after leaving an anonymous, disparaging comment on Amazon.com about a book written by Steve Kettmann; Kettmann later ghost-wrote Jose Canseco's autobiography Juiced. Neyer describes the l'affaire Kettmann in depth on his personal website (see link below).
Neyer grew up in the Midwest rooting for the Kansas City Royals. He currently resides in the Pacific Northwest. Neyer got his start in baseball as James's intern.
Above all, he is perhaps best known for the head shot that used to accompany his stories on ESPN.com, in which he wore a flannel shirt.
