Rick Mercer's Monday Report is a Canadian television comedy series. The series launched in 2004 and hosted by comedian Rick Mercer, the weekly half-hour show focuses on Canadian politics, combining news parody, sketch comedy and satirical editorials. The show's format is essentially a cross between The Daily Show and Mercer's prior series, This Hour Has 22 Minutes.
The first two seasons aired on Monday nights. The show will return for its third season Tuesday nights at 8pm in the fall of 2005; the show's title is expected to become simply Rick Mercer Report.
On each program Mercer travels to a different part of Canada, often to communities that are currently in the news, collecting opinions, reactions, and quotes from people on the street. There he also does his "streeters", the rants about current issues that he popularized on 22 Minutes.
Also there is a segment where regular correspondent, Daryn Jones goes out and checks out cool things. There is also a Celebrity Tip, where a Canadian celebrity gives advice to Canadians, such as Shirley Douglas demonstating how to boost a car.
In the beginning part of each show, Canadian politics and comedy come together as Mercer does his monologue in front of a live audience at the CBC Broadcast Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Some memorable moments from the series include Pierre Berton demonstrating how to roll a joint; a visit to 24 Sussex Drive and carving pumpkins with Paul Martin; and a modernised video to the tune of the Expo 67 song "A Place to Live, A Place to Grow".
Guest that had appeared on the series (besides Berton, Douglas and Martin) were Jann Arden, Ronnie Hawkins, Ed Broadbent, Sheila Copps, Geddy Lee, Mary Walsh, Scott Thompson, Belinda Stronach, Don Cherry, Stockwell "Doris" Day and others.
Monday Report is produced by Island Edge Inc and the CBC.
