Ribavirin (Copegus®; Rebetol®) is an anti-viral drug active against a number of DNA and RNA viruses. It is a member of the nucleoside antimetabolite drugs that interfere with duplication of the viral genetic material.
The oral (tablet) form is used in the treatment of hepatitis C, in combination with interferon drugs. The aerosol form is used to treat Respiratory Syncytial Virus RSV diseases in children.
Important Information:
The primary serious adverse effect of ribavirin is hemolytic anemia, which may worsen existing cardiac disease.
Due to its effect on genetic material, significant teratogenic effects have been noted in all animal species on which Ribavirin has been tested. Therefore, two (2) forms of birth control should be used during treatment of either partner and continued for six (6) months after treatment. (Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant are advised to not take Ribavirin.)
