Reddiar
|
Reddiars or Vanniars are a jati or caste of people originating in South India. Traditionally, they are mostly farmers and landlords. Two of the earliest dynasties in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, the Pallavas and Cholas, were originally of the Reddiar caste. Through emigration, there are now many Reddiars in the Tamil communities of Malaysia, Singapore, and Sri Lanka. Reddiars are one of Gaunder's group. They are the only caste to have its own puranan, the Vanniyar Puranan. "Reddiar" is often used as a surname by members of this caste.
