She comes from a film-industry family of Bengali origin. Her father is director Ram Mukherjee. Kajol, another well-known actress, is her cousin.
She first appeared in the film Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat in 1996. The film was not a hit. However, she was lucky in her second and third films: Ghulam and then the 1998 mega-hit Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. She won a Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for her performance in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
After a string of appearances in so-so movies, she again won a Filmfare Award, this time a Critic's Choice Best Actress award, for her work in the 2002 film Saathiya. For 2004 she won both the Filmfare Best Actress Award and the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for her roles in Hum Tum and Yuva respectively.
She has also appeared in Chalte Chalte (2003) and the end of 2004 blockbuster, Veer-Zaara. Her latest film, Black(The Movie), where she essays the character of a deaf-blind girl, has drawn many favorable reviews.
