Raichu (ライチュウ Raichū) is an Electric-type rodent Pokémon, like its pre-evolution, Pikachu. Raichu can be obtained by using a Thunderstone on Pikachu in all of the Pokémon Role-playing games thus far. There is, however, one exception to this rule. In Pokémon Yellow, your starter Pikachu cannot be evolved following Ash Ketchum's Pikachu's suit of refusing to evolve to prove himself.

Raichu uses its tail as a ground to refrain from shocking itself.

Name Origin

The name Raichu originates from the Japanese word rai, which means "thunder," and "chuu," a word referring to the squeak made by a mouse.

Anime Appearances

Raichu is one of the Pokémon used by Lt. Surge, the Electric type Gym Leader in Vermilion City, Kanto. In the Anime, Ash's Pikachu is first beaten by Lt. Surge's Raichu, but then manages to defeat it because Lt. Surge's Raichu had evolved too quickly and had not yet learned Agility. Consequently, its speed stat was noticeablely low and when it discharged all its electricity (probably ran out of PP) it was rendered powerless.
