RTÉ One is the Republic of Ireland's oldest and most popular television channel, operated by Irish state broadcaster Radio Telefís Éireann. RTÉ One is almost universally available on the VHF and UHF bands in Ireland (though VHF has mostly been phased out), and is available on the Sky Digital satellite service in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, as well as cable and MMDS, including the NTL digital cable service in Northern Ireland. The channel technically broadcasts 24 hours a day, although Euronews is aired as a sustaining service between the end of one days programmes and the next.

Programming
RTÉ One carries mostly Irish made programmes, consisting of News, Current Affairs, Lifestyle programming and Drama. It tends to target the older viewer, with RTÉ Two catering for children and youth audiences. The vast majority of the stations prime-time line up is home produced. The channel's flagship programme is The Late Late Show, aired on Fridays at 21:30 GMT/BST. The channel carries most RTÉ News and Current Affairs programmes. During breaking news events, news specials may be aired on the channel.
On-air identity
The channel's traditional symbol is the Cross of Saint Bridget (much as that of BBC One is the globe), and this was used in all the channels on-air identities from 1961 until 1988. In 1995, RTÉ changed its corporate logo to the current design, the first time the cross also had not featured in the corporate logo. After complaints about the dropping of the cross from the logo, it was re-introduced on-screen on RTÉ One (although never reinstated to the corporate logo). It was dropped again in 2000.
Since the 1995 change of RTÉ logo, RTÉ1 has been spelt as RTÉ One on-air.
The current identity features scences of Irish life "old and new". It was introduced in September 2003.
History
The station began life in 1961 as Telefís Éireann. It was renamed RTE Television in 1966, upon the renaming of the Radio Éireann Authority to RTÉ, and became RTE1 upon the launch of RTÉ2 in 1978. Originally the station broadcast in black and white, but began colour transmissions in 1969 (though it was many years before all home-produced programming was in colour).
RTÉ One was also the sole Irish TV channel until 1978, when RTÉ2 (also known for many years as Network 2) was created. Since 1998 RTÉ One also competes with TV3, a commercial TV channel now mostly owned by Britain's ITV plc and Canada's CanWest Global. RTÉ One today not only competes with the other Irish TV channels, but also with the UK TV networks and other satellite and cable channels that are widely available across Ireland through cable, MMDS and satellite subscription services.
