R38 (NEW YORK CITY SUBWAY CAR)
The R-38 is a New York Subway car class (model). It was built in 1966-1967 for the IND and BMT lines. There are 200 (100 pairs) cars, numbered 3950-4149. Currently they are found mostly on the Template:NYCS A and Template:NYCS C services. R38 now based and serve at 207 Street Overhaul Shop Yard in Inwood, Manhattan. These cars are similar to the R32, but were built by the St. Louis Car Company in Saint Louis, Missouri.
This model was the first to have air conditioning, the last 10 cars (4140-4149) were delivered with original prototype Air Condition in 1967. From this point, the New York City Transit Authority began adopting air condition as standard equipment on new cars.
The R-38's were rebuilt by General Electric at its Buffalo, New York facility in 1987-1988.
NOTES:
- During the rebuilding process, R-38 are fully equip Air Condition system.
- Half-width driving cab at "A" end in the bulkhead, used to be route destination signs. Now, equip with Green LED route letter signs
- These cars are due for retirement by the R160, in 2008-2010.
