Quake 4 is the fourth in the series of Quake first-person shooter computer games and is being developed by Raven Software and distributed by Activision. The game is slated for a late 2005 release. Raven Software has long collaborated with id Software, the usual developers of Quake games. For this game, id is supervising and providing the Doom 3 game engine.
Raven has designed Quake 4 to be oriented towards single-player gameplay, yet it will have multiplayer capability. The single player part will pick up where Quake II ended. Although little is known about the multiplayer part of the game, the developers have promised a similar experience as Quake III Arena has. The game in between the two, Quake III Arena, had no storyline and a very limited single player mode; it was mainly meant for multiplayer. It is not known at this time whether it will bridge the continuity gap between the first Quake and Quake II or whether it will also treat the two games as separate titles entirely, though as of now the latter is more likely.
Although the game is powered by the Doom 3 engine, official screenshots reveal large outdoor and indoor areas - something many thought was not possible with its technology due to it being mainly indoor oriented. It is believed by many hardcore Quake fans that Quake 4 will be the next big multiplayer game and reunite Quake fanatics across the world, something that Doom 3 failed to accomplish for the Doom community.
