It is located in the province of Oulu and is part of the Northern Ostrobothnia region. The city has a population of 9,674 (2003) and covers an area of 5,865.79 km² of which 219.54 km² is water. The population density is 1.7 inhabitants per km². Pudasjärvi is by area the biggest city in Finland.
