Tan Sri had expressed that he wished Proton to be independent of Mitsubishi bases, and wished to cooperate with Peugeot on getting access to its diesel engines.
The Tiara was known as the cheapest Malaysian car in its market. Its appearance followed that of more powerful AXs, such as the AX GT, but the grille was markedly different. Unlike the AX GT, it was available with a 1.1 litre 45 kW engine.
No further Peugeot-Citroën-based models were launched after the Tiara. Tan Sri was killed in a helicopter crash in 1997 and Proton continued with various Mitsubishi-based models.
