Princess Donna Marina Torlonia (October 22, 1916–September 15, 1960), was born in Rome, the youngest daughter of prince Marino Torlonia, 4th prínce of Civitella-Cessi, who had introduced the first motor car to Rome in 1892 (causing havoc to fashionable carriages) and his American wife, Mary Elsie Moore, daughter of Charles Arthur Moore, a rich shipping broker and hardware manufacturer of Connecticut, whose wife, Kate Moore Campbell, was the subject of some notoriety in European society at the time.
Her brother was Don Alessandro Torlonia, 5th Prince di Civitella-Cessi, the husband of the Spanish Infanta Doña Beatriz de Borbón-Battenberg (the aunt of the actual King Juan Carlos I of Spain). The princes Torlonia were one of the richiest families of the 19th century, gaining their fortune in the administration of Vatican finances.
Her first husband was Edward Slater, and her second was Francis Xavier Shields (New York. November 18, 1909 [1910, per other sources]-August 19, 1975), a professional American tennis player whom she met in Rome at a tennis championship.
With Francis Xavier Shields she had two children: Francis Alexander Shields, and Marina Shields. Her eldest granddaughter is the actress Brooke Shields, daughter of Francis Alexander.
