The Prime Minister of Singapore is the elected head of government of the Republic of Singapore (and prior to August 9 1965, the State of Singapore). As outlined in the Constituion, the prime minister is appointed by the president from sitting members of parliament, and is likely to command the confidence of the majority of parliament in the president's view [1] (http://statutes.agc.gov.sg/non_version/cgi-bin/cgi_getdata.pl?actno=1999-REVED-CONST&doctitle=CONSTITUTION%20OF%20THE%20REPUBLIC%20OF%20SINGAPORE%0a&date=latest&method=part&segid=931158659-000425#931158659-001110).
Lee Kuan Yew was prime minister from 1959 to 1990 and retired on November 26 1990. Lee was succeeded by Goh Chok Tong and retained the title of Senior Minister in the Prime Minister's Office.
Goh retired on August 12 2004 and was succeeded by Lee Hsien Loong, continuing the tradition of stable transition in leadership in the city-state. Goh became the Senior Minister, while the elder Lee became Minister Mentor.
