Other Information

Prairie du Sac was a French settlement along the Wisconsin River. It is named such because it is in the large Wisconsin River Valley where the Sauk Indians had a large settlement. The French called it Prairie du Sac because it was a prairie of the Sac (Sauk) Indians.

There is also a sister town named Sauk City. The two cities are so close that there is no real separation between them. They share schools, a police department and a hospital, but have separate fire departments, and libraries. Efforts have been made to join the two cities, but they have failed due to a rivalry of sorts between the towns.

Sauk City is on Highway 12, which leads to Madison, the Capitol of Wisconsin. It is only 30 miles from this city, making it a great place for commuters to live. The rich history of this city, coupled with remarkable features make it a unique Wisconsin town.
