Powell, Ohio

Powell is a city located in Delaware County, Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,247.
The community was first settled around 1801, two years before Ohio became a state. It was named "Middlebury" at the time, because the first settlers came from the Middlebury, Connecticut area. In 1857, Judge Thomas Powell established the first post office in the community, and the residents decided to adopt his name. Powell was finally incorporated as a municipality in 1947. The population remained small until the 1980s, when residential development expanding from the northern Columbus metropolitan area reached Powell. In twenty years, the population rose from less than 400 to over 6,000.
Powell is part of the Olentangy Local School District, and has a branch of the Delaware County Public Library. It maintains its own police department, but is served by the Liberty Township Fire Department.

Powell is located at 40°9'30" North, 83°4'27" West (40.158217, -83.074252)Template:GR. The city sits between the Scioto and Olentangy Rivers, about fourteen miles north of the state capital of Columbus, centered on the intersection of state highway routes 315 and 750.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.9 km² (3.0 mi²). 7.9 km² (3.0 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 6,247 people, 1,975 households, and 1,789 families residing in the city. The population density is 793.4/km² (2,057.3/mi²). There are 2,032 housing units at an average density of 258.1/km² (669.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.29% White, 1.55% African American, 0.11% Native American, 2.98% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 0.85% from two or more races. 1.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,975 households out of which 56.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 86.1% are married couples living together, 3.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 9.4% are non-families. 7.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 1.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.16 and the average family size is 3.34.
In the city the population is spread out with 35.9% under the age of 18, 2.7% from 18 to 24, 36.4% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 3.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 100.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $115,904, and the median income for a family is $117,801. Males have a median income of $79,146 versus $42,656 for females. The per capita income for the city is $46,257. 0.4% of the population and 0.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.7% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
