Portville is a village located in Cattaraugus County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,024.
The Village of Portville was incorporated in 1895 and is within the Town of Portville.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.1 km² (0.8 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.
The village is on the east side of the Allegheny River at the junction of Routes 305 and 417.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,024 people, 416 households, and 270 families residing in the village. The population density is 488.1/km² (1,261.8/mi²). There are 454 housing units at an average density of 216.4/km² (559.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 98.54% White, 0.59% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 0.39% from two or more races. 0.39% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 416 households out of which 35.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.6% are married couples living together, 13.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.9% are non-families. 32.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 3.11.
In the village the population is spread out with 29.7% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 18.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 80.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 79.6 males.
