Port Austin Township, Michigan

Port Austin Township is a township in Huron County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 1,591.
Communities
- The Village of Port Austin is at the western end of the township on Michigan State Highway 25 and at the northern terminus of Michigan State Highway 53.
- Grindstone City is an unincorporated community in the eastern end of the township at Template:Coor dms.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 43.2 km² (16.7 mi²). 42.5 km² (16.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.56% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,591 people, 760 households, and 471 families residing in the township. The population density is 37.5/km² (97.0/mi²). There are 1,690 housing units at an average density of 39.8/km² (103.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 98.49% White, 0.13% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. 1.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 760 households out of which 17.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.6% are married couples living together, 7.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.0% are non-families. 35.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.07 and the average family size is 2.63.
In the township the population is spread out with 16.7% under the age of 18, 4.7% from 18 to 24, 17.9% from 25 to 44, 33.1% from 45 to 64, and 27.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 52 years. For every 100 females there are 91.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the township is $32,841, and the median income for a family is $39,554. Males have a median income of $30,563 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the township is $19,219. 12.9% of the population and 11.1% of families are below the poverty line.
