Pine Bush is a hamlet (and census-designated place) located in the Town of Crawford, in Orange County, New York, roughly coterminous with the 12566 ZIP Code and 744 telephone exchange in the 845 area code (both of which spill over into adjacent regions of the Town of Shawangunk in Ulster County (Another regional identifier, the Pine Bush Central School District, takes in part of the Town of Mamakating in Sullivan County as well). As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,539.

Geography

Pine Bush is on the border of Ulster County, New York.

Pine Bush is located at 41°36'32" North, 74°17'55" West (41.608823, -74.298726)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 5.4 km² (2.1 mi²). 5.4 km² (2.1 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

The town sits on the border between Orange and Ulster counties. The Shawangunk Kill, a small river, marks this boundary.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,539 people, 612 households, and 411 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 283.0/km² (734.4/mi²). There are 654 housing units at an average density of 120.2/km² (312.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 94.74% White, 0.78% African American, 0.06% Native American, 1.17% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 1.04% from other races, and 2.14% from two or more races. 4.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 612 households out of which 35.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% are married couples living together, 14.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% are non-families. 27.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 27.9% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 85.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.6 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $47,679, and the median income for a family is $55,815. Males have a median income of $38,203 versus $30,577 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $22,626. 4.5% of the population and 4.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.2% of those under the age of 18 and 4.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Industry and Business

A railroad branch line terminated in Pine Bush from the late 1800s until the 1970s. Former industries included dairy farming and textiles, both of which have significantly reduced in importance with the closing of the creamery (now no longer extant) and the single textile factory. Currently, the Pine Bush Central School District is one of the largest employers, with two elementary, one middle, and one high schools being located in the town. Other current industries include industrial equipment distribution, construction, and some farming . Pine Bush has a downtown retail district and a retail "strip" on one edge of town.
