Pinal County is located in the central part of the U.S. state of Arizona. As of 2000 its population was 179,727. The county seat is Florence.
Pinal County contains parts of the Tohono O'odham (formerly Papago) Indian Reservation and the Gila River Indian Reservation.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 13,919 km² (5,374 mi²). 13,907 km² (5,370 mi²) of it is land and 12 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.08% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 179,727 people, 61,364 households, and 45,225 families residing in the county. The population density is 13/km² (34/mi²). There are 81,154 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (15/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 70.42% White, 2.76% Black or African American, 7.81% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 15.66% from other races, and 2.67% from two or more races. 29.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 61,364 households out of which 29.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.90% are married couples living together, 11.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.30% are non-families. 21.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.68 and the average family size is 3.09.
In the county the population is spread out with 25.10% under the age of 18, 8.70% from 18 to 24, 27.30% from 25 to 44, 22.70% from 45 to 64, and 16.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 114.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 117.00 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $35,856, and the median income for a family is $39,548. Males have a median income of $31,544 versus $23,726 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,025. 16.90% of the population and 12.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.50% of those under the age of 18 and 8.70% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
