Pilot Mountain is a town located in Surry County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,281. It is named for the nearby landmark of Pilot Mountain, a distinctive geological formation.

Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,281 people, 585 households, and 363 families residing in the town. The population density is 285.9/km² (742.3/mi²). There are 644 housing units at an average density of 143.7/km² (373.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 87.82% White, 9.29% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.86% from other races, and 1.41% from two or more races. 1.25% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 585 households out of which 25.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.3% are married couples living together, 14.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.8% are non-families. 34.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.19 and the average family size is 2.81.
