According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 7.7 km² (3.0 mi²). 7.6 km² (2.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.35% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 8,900 people, 3,545 households, and 2,456 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 1,176.8/km² (3,050.9/mi²). There are 3,674 housing units at an average density of 485.8/km² (1,259.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 95.17% White, 2.78% African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.57% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. 1.44% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,545 households out of which 31.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.4% are married couples living together, 11.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% are non-families. 25.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.93.
In the CDP the population is spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.5% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 91.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.8 males.
