Papa Stronsay
|
Papa Stronsay is a small island in Orkney, Scotland, lying north east of Stronsay. A fertile island, it became an important centre for herring curing in the eighteenth century, but was abandoned in the 1970s. It is currently home to a Transalpine Redemptorist monastery.
The island has remains of an eleventh century chapel, under which may lie an eighth century Pictish monastery. In one of these churches, Rognvald was murdered in 1046. Other remains include cairns and a burnt mound.
