Pankow
|
Pankow is a borough of Berlin. In 2001, it was merged with the former boroughs of Prenzlauer Berg and Weißensee; the resulting borough retained the name Pankow. It encompasses an area of 103.07 km² and has, as of 2003, about 347,100 inhabitants. Its current mayor is Burkhard Kleinert (PDS).
When Germany was divided, Pankow was the location of the East German government within Berlin. Western writers often referred to it as the capital, rather than Berlin itself, the official capital of East Germany.
