Painesville is a city located in Lake County, Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the city proper had a total population of 17,503. Including the township 52,401. It is the county seat of Lake CountyTemplate:GR.

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 17,503 people, 6,525 households, and 4,032 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,130.1/km² (2,928.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 76.99% White, 12.93% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 6.50% from other races, and 2.86% from two or more races. 12.89% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 6,525 households out of which 34.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.4% are married couples living together, 16.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.2% are non-families. 31.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.22.
